Speaker Michael Simpson (R-Blackfoot)

My interest in politics was sparked by a high school government teacher. I decided to major in political science in college.

After I graduated from dental school and began practicing in Blackfoot, I read about an opening on the Blackfoot City Council. I picked up a petition and entered the race. I won and served one term on the council.

While working on the council, I became acquainted with area legislators. When one of them retired, I decided to run for that seat. I still consider it one of the greatest honors of my life to have been elected to represent the citizens of my district.

I didn't intend to seek leadership positions, but I was encouraged to run for Caucus Chairman. After that experience, I believed I could do a good job as Speaker of the House and I'm currently serving my third term as Speaker.

The Speaker is the Chief Administrative Officer of the House of Representatives and is responsible for authorizing payment of bills, approving travel for members, appointing committee membership, setting the calendar for legislation and presiding over the House when it is in session. I'm elected by all the members of the House-Republicans and Democrats-and because of that I believe I have a moral responsibility to make sure each member of the House is treated fairly.
